Hearing on mercy petition of Beant Singh murder case’s convict on November 1

CHANDIGARH: Balwant Singh Rajoana has urged for commutation of death sentence to life imprisonment in the murder case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Balwant Singh Rajoana has been in jail for 26 years. Ten years ago he had filed a mercy petition to commute the death sentence.

Former Attorney General of India and senior Supreme Court lawyer Mukul Rohatgi appeared for the death row convict Balwant Singh. He told a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit that his client deserves a life sentence.

Now on November 1, 2022, the matter related to the mercy petition of Balwant Singh will be heard before a three-judge bench.

The then Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, was assassinated in 1995 by a suicide bomber Dilawar Singh in a blast in the premises of the Punjab-Haryana Secretariat.

Balwant Singh Rajoana and some others were convicted in this case. Rajoana was sentenced to death by a special CBI court in Chandigarh on August 1, 2007.
