Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrates Engineers Day

KAPURTHALA: Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated Engineers Day by organizing an online workshop on Internet of Things (IoT). Engineer's Day is celebrated every year on September 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian engineer and, an eminent scholar and statesman, Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Vishveshvarya. Around 100 budding Engineers from different Engineering colleges of Punjab participated in the workshop.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Neelima Jerath, Director General, Science City said that today, IoT helps people live and work smarter, as well as gain complete control over their lives. In addition to offering smart devices to automate homes, IoT provides businesses with a real-time look into how their systems really work, delivering insights into everything from the performance of machines to supply chain and logistics operations.  Further, she said that IoT can benefit farmers in agriculture by making their job easier. Sensors can collect data on rainfall, humidity, temperature and soil content, as well as other factors, that would help automate farming techniques.

Dr. Anurag Sharma, Professor, GNA University was the resource person at this occasion.  During the workshop, Dr. Sharma briefly explained how a network of connected physical devices uses sensors and Application Programming Interface (API) to exchange data over network.  Students learnt the fundamental concepts of cloud computing, wireless interfaces for data transfer & potential of IOT in real time applications. He demonstrated the technical steps involved in an IoT based project using an open source software and hardware development environment i.e. Node-MCU. Students were also actively involved in performing a practical experiment that involves interfacing of controller with cloud computing and thus, understood how to send data on cloud network.

Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director Science City present at the occasion said that IoT deployment will continue to grow in future as decision making can be automated and it enables speedier, better quality of monitoring, processing & control. Further, the career opportunities that currently exist in IoT could never be even thought of before, he added
