The Shahkot police have booked three family members, including a couple, on the charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.
The investigating officer (IO) Sulindar Singh said that the accused have been identified as Avtar Singh son of Hakam Singh a resident of Tappar village under Jagraon police station, his wife Baljindar Kaur, and daughter Navjot Kaur and wife of Bhupindar Singh now living in England.
Pal Singh a resident of Shahla Pur village complained to the senior superintendent of police Jalandhar (rural) that the accused persuaded him and asked to deposit Rs 18 Lakhs in the account of Navjot Kaur to facilitate her migration to England but did not return the money after their daughter reached England and thus cheated him.
IO said that a case under sections 406 (breach of trust) 420(cheating) and 120-B(criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused after an inquiry.
