Baisakhi Mela - 2023 starts Kanjli wetland with great zeal and fervour

Two day "Basakhi Mela 2023" started on Saturday with enthusiasm and thrill at world famous Kanjali Wetland with an aim to promote tourism and showcase the rich culture and heritage of Kapurthala. 

 

“Basakhi mela“ was formally inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal.

 

Congratulating the people on second Basakhi mela , sarangal said that in view of the momentum received from the last "Basakhi Mela" held after 22 years, this time mela would be held for 2 days.  

 

He said that this mela will not only connect the new generation with culture, but will also make them aware of environmental protection.

 

In response to a question regarding the resumption of the "Heritage Mela" held till 2008 at Kapurthala, Sarangal said that a proposal is being prepared in this regard and the Heritage Mela expectedly to be held in October/November.

 

Talking about comprehensive planning going on for the beautification of Kanjali Wetland recognized internationally through the Ramsar Convention in 2002, Sarangal said that this area has a great potential for tourism and Punjab Government led by chief minister Bhagwant Mann would leave no stone unturned to tab this potential . 

 

On this occasion, Deputy Commissioner also visited about 40 stalls set up by various self help groups to promote women's employment and boost business. 

 

These stalls included specially handmade clothes, bags, food items, organic fertilizers, jute bags.  

 

During the fair, the art of pottery making , 1971 model tractor, calligraphy, rangoli, Tambola remained the center of attraction for the people.  

 

During the mela students of different schools performed band and also participated in painting competitions.

 

Folk singer Dalwinder Dayalpuri, started the cultural program at the Baisakhi Mela with the song "Punjab Mera Rahe Vasda". Senior officials and people including the Deputy Commissioner danced to the cultural songs sung by him.

 

Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Sagar Setia, Aam Aadmi Party Joint Secretary Gursharan Singh Kapur, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Anupam Keller, SDM Lal Vishwas Bains and other officials of the district were present on this occasion.
