No-confidence motion against Nurmahal NC president defeated

NURMAHAL

Nurmahal Nagar Council (NC) president H.K. Johal on Wednesday proved his majority at a special general body meeting by defeating the no-confidence motion by one vote. Some councillors from the opposition had moved the no-confidence motion against the Congress leader recently. Subsequently, the meeting was convened.

Of the 13 members in the NC, 7 voted in favour of Mrs. HK Johal while 6 members were absent.

As the minimum number of votes required for passing the no-confidence motion was 9, NC Executive Officer Rajiv Oberoi declared that Mrs. Johal had proved her majority to continue as president.

Mrs. Hardip Kaur Johal and ward no.10 councilor were elected Nurmahal Nagar council president in May 2021 by toss and her party colleague and ward no,5 councilor Jang Bahadar Kohli was elected vice president also by toss.

The Congress has six members, Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD)  three,  Bhartiya Janata Party(BJP) 1, Bahujan Samaj Party  2, and Independent 1 in the house of thirteen. President's post is reserved for women in Nurmahal.

Meanwhile, some members, who were against the president, alleged that some of those who initially supported the motion succumbed to pressure.

Eight councillors of Nurmahal Nagar council had signed two requisition letters for Nagar Council (NC) meeting to bring a no-confidence motion against the president and vice president.

Phillaur subdivision magistrate (SDM) in an official communication to Nurmahal Nagar Council executive officer (EO) said that his office has received two representations signed by existing councillor’s in his office to bring a no-confidence motion against president Hardip Kaur Johal and the vice president.

SDM said in his communication that these requestions letters are sent to you to act under Municipal Act 1911 and according to government directions.

Jalandhar deputy commissioner has forwarded two requisition letters sent to him by Nurmahal council members to SDM.

Meanwhile, about 100 congress activists led by Jalandhar (rural) president and Shahkot MLA Hardev Singh Laddi demonstrated in front of the NC office in protest against the machinations of the ruling APP government to topple the president by unfair means.
