Chandigarh: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Friday imposed Environmental Compensation of Rs 2, 000 crores on the state of Punjab for allegedly not managing soil as well as liquid wastw management causing harm to the environment.
According to news agency ANI, the NGT directed the state of Punjab to pay Rs 2,000 crore as environmental compensation for mismanagement of solid and liquid waste. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel issued the order.
100 crore fine was also imposed on the UP government
However, earlier the NGT i.e. National Green Tribunal had directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay Rs 100 crore for inadequate management of liquid waste in Pratapgarh, Rae Bareli and Jaunpur districts. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said that as per the report of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the level of pollution has not been reduced by bio-remediation. The bench also included Justice Sudhir Agrawal and expert member A Senthil Val.
3,000 crores fine imposed on Rajasthan
The NGT had last week directed the Rajasthan government to pay Rs 3,000 crore as environmental compensation for mismanagement of solid and liquid waste. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel held the state authorities responsible for contributing to pollution and failing to discharge their constitutional duties. The bench also included Justice Sudhir Agrawal and expert member A Senthil Veli.
