Man arrested in Phillaur brandishing weapon obstructing traffic;32-bore pistol seized

JALANDHAR
In a swift action underscoring heightened vigilance during Panchayat election preparations in Punjab, Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested a man for allegedly brandishing a weapon and obstructing traffic near a government office in Phillaur on Tuesday. The police seized a 32-bore pistol and four live cartridges from the accused’s possession.

The accused, identified as Gurjit Singh of Lohgarh village in Goraya, was apprehended hours after the incident. The police recovered the revolver and ammunition from him.

Divulging details to the media, Senior Superintendent of Police Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said the accused had parked his Scorpio (PB 08-EG 0044) in the middle of the road outside the Block Development and Panchayat Officer’s (BDPO) office in Phillaur, causing a traffic obstruction. When Pritam Ram (48), a resident of Saifabad village, confronted him about the obstruction, Gurjit Singh allegedly brandished the revolver and issued threats.

Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team led by SHO Phillaur, under the supervision of DSP Swaran Singh Bal, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

“The accused’s actions violate the Deputy Commissioner’s orders prohibiting the possession and display of weapons during the election preparation period,” said SSP Khakh. “The weapon has been seized as evidence, and we have recommended the cancellation of the accused’s arms license.”

A case has been registered under sections 223(B), 285, and 351(3) of the Indian Penal Code for obstruction of a public way, negligent conduct concerning fire or combustible matter, and criminal intimidation.

Witnesses to the incident, including Narwal Singh and Sodhi Singh from Saifabad village, provided key statements that helped lead to the quick arrest.

As Panchayat election preparations continue, Jalandhar Rural Police have intensified security measures across the district to ensure a peaceful pre-election environment.

SSP Khakh urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could interfere with the democratic process.
