JALANDHAR

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal today directed officials from the mining and police departments to take stringent action against illegal miners in the district. Emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy, Dr. Aggarwal highlighted the urgent need to curb this illegal activity.

Dr. Aggarwal reported that, under Section 21 of the Punjab Mining and Mineral Act 2013, a total of 19 FIRs have been filed this year against individuals involved in illegal mining. This section provides for imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to Rs. 5 lakhs, or both. Additionally, a total penalty of Rs. 20.05 lakh has already been recovered from violators.

He sought detailed status reports from the relevant departments on pending cases against illegal miners to develop a multi-faceted strategy for stringent enforcement. Dr. Aggarwal also stressed the importance of accelerating the recovery of pending penalties imposed on illegal miners. He also mentioned that the personal responsibility of the officials concerned will be fixed in case where illegal mining activities are found in the district.

Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner instructed officials to expedite the auction of seized vehicles by policy guidelines at the earliest. This measure aims to deter illegal activities by ensuring that confiscated assets are promptly and transparently disposed of as per rules, he added.

Prominent officials present at the meeting included SDM Phillaur Amanpal Singh, SDM Shahkot Rishab Bansal, SDM-1 Dr. Jai Inder Singh, SDM-2 Balbir Raj Singh, and other representatives from the police and mining departments.
