Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Bholath MLA,who had recently courted controversy in Sangrur elections when he demanded that Punjab should also have a tenancy act in accordance with the HP tenancy act 1972, still stands by his statement and demand.

In a post on X today, Khaira has reiterated that despite opposition from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Punjab chief minsiter Bhagwant Mann and some from within the congress, his own party, he demands this act to be legislated.

He said that he had submitted this as a private bill to the Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 2023, but the government is in confusion to accept it.

“I stick to my proposition of having  a law in Punjab in accordance with HP tenancy act 1972 where no non Punjabi should be allowed to buy agriculture land, become a voter or take government jobs in Punjab before clearing certain conditions of this act. This will prevent drastic changes in demography of Punjab,’ Khaira has posted on X today.

He claimed that about 72 lakhs of Punjabis have migrated to other countries in past decades out of 3 crore total and if it continues to happen, Punjabis would run into majority in Punjab.

He said that apart from HP, this act also exists in some other states too.

Even Punjabis can not buy agricultural land in Rajasthan.

To a greater extent, Khaira is right in his statement because non Punjabis are also encroaching on the jobs meant for Punjabis and encroachment of government land is also there.

The gap left by the Punjabi population is allegedly being filled permanently by migration from other states, which allegedly settle here permanently.

But mass migration from some other states is vote bank in Punjab and no political party risks to legislate such an act because of backlash from other political parties and losing vote bank.

Khaira also blamed that Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann is under pressure from his supremo and does not dare to legislate this act.

Khaira was sharply criticised by the PM,Punjab CM and others for this statement during his election campaign in Sangrur.

The PM even indirectly gave its reference that congress wants to bring in such an act in Punjab to stop migration.
