Congress wrests Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat  from AAP

 

JALANDHAR

The Congress party on Tuesday wrested the Jalandhar Parliamentary seat from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) when its candidate Charanjit Singh Channi was declared elected. He defeated Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku who won this seat in the bye-election as AAP candidate and joined BJP leaving AAP.

Charanjit Jit Singh Channi, a former chief minister of Punjab received 3.90053 votes while Sushil Kumar Rinku received 2,14060 votes and AAP candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu received 2.08889 voters.

 During the bye-election in a four-cornered contest, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab won the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bye-poll on, May 13, 2023, with a margin of 58,691 votes. The Congress lost its traditional stronghold of 24 years to the 13-month-old ruling party.

Congress rebel and AAP candidate Sushil Rinku, had trounced Congress's Karamjit Kaur, the wife of Santokh Chaudhary, whose death during the Bharat Jodo Yatra necessitated the bye-poll. In the past five decades, the Congress has lost the seat only four times.

The AAP had secured 3,02,097 votes, while Congress finished with 2,43,450 votes. The Akali-BSP combine was third with 1,58,354 votes and the BJP came fourth place with 1,34,706 votes.

The Jalandhar parliamentary reserved seat falls in the state's Dalit-dominated Doaba region.

 

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had sprung a surprise in the last polls with its candidate Jyoti Maan getting over 1.5 lakh votes.

 

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 20 candidates contested from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency.
