Seizures during elections; committee formed to dispose of cases

JALANDHAR
Deputy Commissioner-Cum-District Election Officer Vishesh Sarangal has constituted a three-member committee to deal with the cases about the seizure of cash and other material confiscated by flying squads, static surveillance teams, and excise teams to strictly implement the model code of conduct.

Divulging the details, the DEO said that Additional Commissioner Municipal Corporation Jalandhar Amarjit Bains would be the Chairman of this committee while Deputy Comptroller (Finance & Audit)  Aman Maini and District Treasury Officer Manjit Kaur to be members of the committee.

Pointing out further, Mr. Sarangal said as per guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, this committee will take decisions regarding seizure and release of cash and other items confiscated during checking to avoid inconvenience to the general public.

He added that the committee shall Suo-moto examine each case of seizure made by the police, SST, or FST and upon confirming that the confiscated material was not linked with any political party or candidate, the committee will pass orders concerning release of such seizure. He mentioned that if the person concerned presented any proof legitimating the seizure, the committee shall decide on the release of such cash or other impounded material.

Notably, as per guidelines of ECI, the cash carry limit has been fixed up to Rs. 50,000 given Lok Sabha Elections, and people carrying cash exceeding the prescribed limit need to keep bank receipts or proof legitimating the cash.
