Health department issues advisory against cold wave

JALANDHAR

With the cold wave continuing to grip Punjab, the health department has issued an advisory asking residents to take precautions against the ongoing cold wave.

Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar  Vishesh Sarangal has urged the people to follow the advisory, especially to save the children and old people from the cold wave.

In the advisory, the department asked the people to keep an eye on the weather forecast and people should strictly follow the instructions to stay safe in these bone-chilling cold conditions.

It further read that people should check local weather forecasts on the radio, TV, or newspaper. It also suggested stocking required woolen clothes and wearing several layers of lightweight clothes instead of one layer of heavy clothing as tight clothes reduce blood circulation. In case of symptoms of flu, or runny nose after prolonged exposure to cold, one should immediately see a doctor.

The advisory also appealed to people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to protect themselves from the contact of cold waves. People must remain dry, and cover their head, neck, hands, and toes adequately. Use winter caps, and mufflers, and wear insulated/waterproof shoes.

Eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins to maintain adequate immunity. Drink warm fluids regularly, as it will retain body heat to fight the cold wave. It also suggested that prolonged exposure to cold can cause pale, hard, and numb skin, and black blisters on exposed body parts.
The advisory further suggested not to ignore the shivering as it is among the initial signs of the body lacking heat. Avoid alcohol as it lowers your body temperature and increases the risk of hypothermia.
