Chairman District Planning Committee Amritpal Singh today asked the Police and Civil Administration to ensure proper implementation of the speed limit in the district as over-speeding was observed as one of the reasons behind road accidents resulting in loss of lives in the country.
In a letter issued to District Administration Jalandhar and Commissionerate of Police, the Chairman stated that many people have lost their lives in road accidents caused by over-speeding in the country. He said that the maximum speed for four-wheelers vehicles and two-wheelers was already fixed by the government, however, it should be implemented in letter and spirit. He said that proper sign boards highlighting speed limits should be displayed alongside roads to create awareness among vehicle drivers about speed limits. Mr. Amritpal Singh further added that only ambulances, fire brigades, police, and other emergency vehicles should be given exemption from this speed limit fixation while the remaining vehicles must be made to follow speed limits within the district. The Chairman also directed the police department to conduct a special drive to curtail over-speeding in the district by setting up special checks with speedometers to ensure vehicles were plying within the prescribed speed.
He urged the people of the district to strictly follow the traffic rules including speed limitations so that instances of road accidents can be minimized to save precious lives of people. He further added that it was our collective responsibility to make roads a safer place for everyone by adhering to the motor vehicle norms.
