Mann promised to make Punjab ‘Dharna Mukt’ but ended up making it a ‘Dharna Yukt’: BJP Spokesperson

National Spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jaiveer Shergill has launched a scathing attack on the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP Government in Punjab for not fulfilling the pre-poll promises and completely ignoring the genuine demands of various sections of the society. In a strongly worded statement issued today, Shergill said that even since AAP has taken over the reins of Punjab, the state is witnessing frequent dharnas. “Besides various employees unions, farmers, teachers, unemployed youth, villagers, doctors, and industrialists have been staging protest dharnas in various parts of the state against this Aisho Araam Party for not paying any attention to their genuine demands”, he said.
Taking a jibe at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the BJP Spokesperson said, “During the assembly election campaign, Mann had categorically promised to make Punjab ‘Dharna Mukt’ but shockingly, because of its policies of deceit and misgovernance, the AAP government has turned Punjab into a “Dharna Yukt State.” Shergill, who is also the Punjab BJP Permanent Invitee member, further said that what is more shameful is the fact instead of resolving the issue of the protestors, Mann is giving highly insensitive statements.
“In the context of farmers, sometime back, Mann had stated that farmer organizations sit on dharna without any reason. He had further said that Pehle dharne ke liye wajah dhoondte thee aur ab dharne ke liye jagah dhoondte hai (Earlier they used to find reasons to protest and now they find places to protest). Such remarks are completely unacceptable”, Shergill said, while reminding Mann that he should not forget that AAP was also born out of dharnas only.
Expressing his extreme dismay over the shoddy functioning of the AAP government, Shergill, termed the AAP government as totally anti-people. “Those at the helm of power have become so dictatorial that they are not even allowing peaceful protests. Recently, on July 1, peacefully protesting teachers in Sangrur were lathicharged. Their only demand from the government was to regularize their services”, he pointed out, while adding that AAP Government is suppressing the voice of every single person who criticizes their wrongdoings and has snatched the right to freedom of speech from the people of Punjab.
BJP leader further said that farmers in Punjab are also up in arms against the AAP government and are staging protest dharnas. “Besides several other issues, the protesting farmers are demanding canal water for every agricultural field in Punjab and withdrawal of cases registered against their leader by the AAP government”, he said. Shergill said that the miserable failure of the government could well be gauged from the fact that recently, sewage and sanitation workers of Ludhiana MC had to stage a protest dharna on account of delayed salaries, which completely belies the claims of the Chief Minister that the economy of the state is in the pink of health.
Referring to the recent rains, Shergill said that the AAP government was completely unprepared to tackle the situation because of which people in both the urban and rural areas of Punjab have to face extreme hardships and financial loss. “It is a harsh reality that the AAP government has failed on all fronts and now there is a palpable sense of anger among the people and gheraoing of the elected representatives of AAP is a testimony to that. The resentment among the masses has acquired such alarming proportions that yesterday inhabitants of Souja Village in Nabha gheraoed AAP MLA Gurdev Singh Dev Mann over the release of stranded rainwater toward their villages. The protestors were so agitated that Mann’s security has to take him away from the spot”, said Shergill, while concluding that after assuming power, the AAP government has backstabbed the people of Punjab.
