LOHIAN KHAS

A 25-five-year-old youth of Mundi Chohlia village under Lohian Khas police station has been washed away in floods after breaches at two points in Dhusi Bandh of river Sutlej which led to the flooding of dozens of villages of this block on early Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as Arash Deep Singh son of Balkar a resident of Mundi Chohlia village who was trying to safely park his motorcycle and was washed away in flood water.

Breaches occurred between Mandala and Nasir Pur villages last midnight and at Mundi Chohlia village in the early morning.  The breach at Mindi village is about 40 feet wide.

Breaches occurred due to the fast overflow of water in the river Sutlej due to incessant rains.

It is pertinent to mention here that in 2019  a breach occurred at Mandala Village.

Experts said these villages lie in a low-lying area that witnesses heavy flooding. They said that obstructions under the bridge of the Lohian-Makhu National Highway also caused flooding.

Sources said that water flows into the Sutlej remained high and may swell further.

Meanwhile, the district administration has begun rescue operations on a war footing,

Jalandhar (rural) Senior Superintendent of Police M.S Bhaullar said in a press note that hundreds of residents of affected villages have been shifted to safe places and cabinet minister Balkar Singh, MPs Sant Balbir Singh Sushil Kumar Rinku, DIG Jalandhar Range Swapan Sharma visited affected villages. He said that NDRF teams are helping in rescue operations.

But locals complained of not being helped by the admiration.  We are yet to receive any aid from the government. People are facing problems due to floods. We request the government to arrange immediate relief material for us and set up relief camps here, locals said.
