Residents of many villages of the Giddarr Pindi area on Monday blocked Lohian Makhu National Highway to protest the entry of river water in their villages.
Flood Roku Committee led the Dharna alleging that Sutlej River water has entered many villages after water overflowed following the closure of gates under the bridge.
Committee leaders Kulwinder Singh Mukhtiar Singh, Baldev Singh, Bhagat Singh, and Sarup Singh said in a written complaint said that residents of Bharoanna village under Kabir Pur police station Kapurthala closed the gates of the bridge which led to an overflowing river and water inundated many villages.
They demanded that gates should be opened, and action should be taken against guilty people.
They said smaller bridges be constructed on Lohian -Makhu Highway for easy flow of flood water.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Varinder Pal Singh reached the spot and pacified agitating residents and ordered the opening of closed gates and gave assurance to act against the guilty. ADC said that a police guard will be stationed there. After this assurance residents ended dharna on the road and traffic was restored.
