Nurmahal sewerage project running 12 years behind schedule; residents demand inquiry

NURMAHAL

The ongoing Rs`24.4-crore project for laying sewerage pipelines in Nurmahal town has yet to be completed and commissioned even after about 12 years.

The project, started by the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada) and allotted to private agencies is going on at a snail’s pace. As per schedule, the project was to be completed in nine months.

The then chief minister Parkash Singh Badal laid the foundation of the project on February 11, 2011.  Under the scheme, the main sewerage pipelines of km in length and branch lines of 31 km in length were to be laid down in the entire town for the drainage of sewage to one place.

Nagar council (NC) president Hardip Kaur Johal said the sewerage project has not been completed and some areas are without sewerage and some sewerage lines are yet to be connected to main lines. She said that the executive officer has recently written to Glada(Greater Ludhiana    Area Development Agency ) executive engineer to complete the sewerage project at the earliest and hand it over to the NC

Residents have brought this issue to the notice of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and demanded an inquiry by the Vigilance Bureau.

Dilbag Singh a resident of Baina Pur village and a social; activist in representation to the Chief Minister said that temporary structures erected for the construction of platforms have not been dismantled which are major obstacles to the free flow of sewerage water resulting in a frequent overflow of lines. He said that there are about 200 such platforms and demanded an inquiry by the vigilance bureau.
