World Copd Day: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is undoubtedly a serious disease- Dr. H J. Singh

JALANDHAR: On the occasion of World COPD DAY Dr. H J. Singh an eminent Chest Physician and Interventional Pulmonologist of Ranjit Chest & Multi Super specialty Hospital Jalandhar and Chairman Indian Chest Society Punjab while addressing the press said that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is no doubt a serious disease but is a common preventable and treatable disease which is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation due to airway/ or alveolar abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases. As per WHO data, COPD is 3 Major Cause of death World wide. As per National Data 6% of the adult population has COPD & Globally there are around 3

Million deaths annually. Considering the severity of the disease World COPD Day is being celebrated today to make the people aware of it around the theme” NEVER TOO EARLYNEVER TOO LATE” This message indicates that meaningful actions can be taken by the people to improve their respiratory health at any stage before or after COPD

Dr. Singh further said most common respiratory symptoms include dyspnea, cough and/ or sputum production. These symptoms may be under-reported by patients. But the major cause of COPD are smoking, occupational exposures and pollution from indoor fire. Dr. Singh said that most effective medication for this disease is inhaler because it directly reaches the lungs as compared to tablets and Syrups.

At last Dr. Singh stated that COPD is not curable but yet can be prevented and managed if diagnosed properly. So if any of symptoms noticeable, patient should go for

spirometry test for checking its lung efficiency .
