Nakodar residents submit representation to DC against case for protest over bad road
NAKODAR
A representation has been submitted to Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar, Doctor Himanshu Aggarwal, expressing serious concern over the booking of residents of Nakodar who had staged a peaceful protest against the poor condition of roads in the area.
Dilbag singh a socail activist in a representation said that local residents, frustrated by long-pending civic negligence and unsafe road conditions, organized a peaceful and democratic protest to draw the attention of the authorities. However, instead of addressing the issue, the police registered a case against the protesters, which is an action as deeply concerning and unjustified.
The representation emphasizes that the protest was peaceful, conducted in public interest, and aimed solely at highlighting deteriorated road infrastructure that affects daily life, mobility, and public safety. It further notes that the Right to Peaceful Protest is a fundamental democratic right guaranteed under Articles 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(b) of the Constitution of India, subject to reasonable restrictions.
Representation said that criminalizing citizens for raising genuine civic grievances discourages public participation in governance and undermines constitutional values. The poor condition of roads in Nakodar has reportedly led to accidents, vehicle damage, and hardship for residents, including students, senior citizens, and emergency service providers.
The representation urges the district administration to withdraw all false or unnecessary cases registered against the peaceful protesters, conduct a fair inquiry into the circumstances under which the cases were filed, and take immediate steps to repair and improve the damaged roads. It also calls for directions to local authorities to respect democratic rights and engage constructively with public grievances.
Dilbag Singh expressed confidence that the district administration will take prompt and just action in the larger interest of public safety, democratic values, and good governance.
