The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has arrested Balwant Singh, Superintendent, posted at the Punjab Roadways depot-1 in Jalandhar, red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 40000. Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the VB stated that the case was registered based on a complaint filed by a retired driver of Punjab Roadways. “The complainant has approached the VB alleging that the aforementioned Superintendent has demanded Rs 50000 instead of preparing his overtime bills pending before his retirement. Upon his request, the Superintendent has agreed to take Rs 40000 for the same, but he didn’t want to pay the bribe. He further alleged that the accused official had already received Rs 1,54,000 in instalments during the pendency of his case in the labour court”, he informed. The spokesperson added that following verification of the complaint, a vigilance team from the Jalandhar range laid a trap during which the above-mentioned accused was caught red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 40000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. In this regard, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the said Superintendent at VB Police Station, Jalandhar Range.
