JALANDHAR
Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal on Monday morning personally visited various parts of the
city to take stock of the waterlogging situation.
Accompanied by Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Rishi, Dr. Aggarwal said that continuous rainfall had led to water accumulation in several low-lying areas, causing hardship to residents. However, in the direction of the Punjab Government, joint efforts of the Jalandhar Administration, Municipal Corporation, and Police Department ensured early drainage of rainwater from the most affected localities. The DC revealed that more than 200 complaints of water entering homes and basements had been received at the flood control room. “Our teams have responded promptly to each complaint, and drainage facilities have been utilized to their maximum capacity,” he stated. The rainwater, he informed, has been discharged into the Kala Sanghia Drain, which further flows into the Sutlej River.
Dr. Aggarwal clarified that there were no reports of any bundh breach in the district. Nearly 70,000 cusecsof rainwater were passing through Gidderpindi, while the bundh’s capacity stood at one lakh cusecs, leaving no cause for panic. He also noted that water release from the Bhakra Dam was being closely monitored to avoid any untoward situation.
Highlighting the preparedness of the administration, the DC said that 54 relief centres had been established,
out of which eight were currently functional with residents from vulnerable areas already shifted there as aprecautionary measure. Appealing for calm, Dr. Aggarwal assured people that both the city and river situation was under control. “We are fully geared up to tackle any eventuality with a robust flood control mechanism,” he said, while sharing the district’s flood control room number (0181-224006) and WhatsApp helpline (9646222555) for assistance
