The Mehat Pur police have booked five members of a family, including two women, on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy.
Station House Officer (SHO) Balveer Singh said that the accused has been identified as Makhan Singh, son of Gurdass Singh, a resident of Dhamre Dian Chhana village, his father, Gurdass Singh, his wife Shinder Kaur, his brother Prem Singh, and his daughter Jasveer Kaur.
Gurdev Kaur, wife of Amrik Singh, a resident of Mundi Cholian village under Lohian Khas police station, complained to the senior superintendent of police(SSP) , Jalandhar (rural) said the accused agreed to marry their daughter, Jasveer Kaur, to her son, Baldev Singh, living illegally in the USA, and the Chunni ceremony of Jasveer Kaur was held
The complainant said it was mutually agreed that Jasveer would go to Canada, from where she would travel by car to the US to join Baldev Singh.
She said that she spent Rs 12.5 lakhs for facilitating the migration of Jasveer to Canada, but after reachingCanada, Jasveer Kaur did not join her son as per a conspiracy by her family, and thus, she was cheated by her family.
SHO said DSP (HQ) inquired, and SSP sought legal opinion of the district attorney and ordered registrationof a case against the accused and a case under sections 406(breach of trust), 420(cheating and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC had been registered has been registered.
