Notorious drug smuggler booked for jumping parole

The Mehatpur police have booked a notorious drug smuggler on the charge of jumping parole

Station House Officer (SHO) Balveer Singh said that the accused has been identified as Surji Lal alias

Sodhi, son of Manjit Lal a resident of Chuheki village under Nurmahal police station.

Superintendent of Central Jail Ludhiana in an official communication to the senior superintendent of police(SSP), Jalandhar (rural) said that the accused serving ten years imprisonment in a case by Mukad Pur police station  (SBS Nagar) was released on parole for six weeks on March 17, 2022, and gave his address warrants of imprisonment as care of Harjindar Kumar son of Milakhi Ram a resident of Umre Wal Billa village under Mehat Pur police station instead of Chuheki village and was bound to report his presence in jail on April 29 2022, and his parole was extended to May 16 2022 as per order of the Punjab and  High Cour (HC) and he was bound to report in jail on May 16 2022 but he failed.

Jail Superintendent said the HC, in a petition, passed an order on March 27, 2025, stating that the state council will file an affidavit of concerned officials in respect to the status as of the date and steps taken by the state to take the applicant into custody.

He urged the SSP to direct the Mehatpur police to register a case against the prisoner

 SHO said a case under sections 1 and 2 of the Punjab Good Conduct Prisoners Temporary Release Act 1962 has been registered against the accused on the order of the SSP.It is pertinent to mention here that the Nurmahal police had arrested the accused in 2013 with 1.5 kilograms of heroin and Rs 24 Lakhs in drug money, and was sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment by a Jalandhar court
