Nakodar NC failed to implement no-vendor zones policy

NAKODAR

Nine years after declaring the area from Dakhani Adda up to Ambedkar Chowk as a no-vendor zone, the Nakodar Nagar Council (NC) has failed to implement the town vending committee’s decision taken in its meeting held on May 13.,2016.

The NC formed TVC under The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of street vending) Act, 2014.

As per the Act, the NC has to provide basic amenities along with the smart vendors’ identity cards to them.

NC had conducted a survey of street vendors in 2014 and had identified around 261 vendors.

The Interior of the town was declared no vendor zone. It had decided that all vendors would be allotted space equal to a “rehri” (cart) and given a license adding that if a vendor remained absent for 15 days, his license would be cancelled.

Illegal encroachments by vendors and unregulated businesses are one of the biggest challenges before the authorities. With the help of the policy, the NC was hopeful they would be able to solve the illegal encroachment issue.  The NC formed a TVC in July 2014, which was re-casted in 2015 to implement the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors, in 2009.

The NC had constructed the Rehri market for Rs 8.5 lakhs in front of Historic Nakodar Tombs.
