The Punjab Chief Minister's office (CMO) has asked Kumar Amit, a special secretary, to the chief minister to investigate the issue of non-payment compensation to the families of rail accident victims that occurred on November 23, 2006, near Nurmahal.
The CMO has emailed this message to Dilbag Singh, a resident of Baina Pur village and social activist who has mailed the CMO a news report published on November 23, 2024.
Four female students of PTM Arya College Nurmahal were killed when their vehicle was hit by a train on the Phillaur- Nurmahal rail section near Gumtala village on November 23,
2006.
The government had announced Rs 5 Lakh each for the deceased’s kin and Rs 50,000 for the families of the injured and had handed over Rs
1 Lakh was given to the families of the deceased, and Rs 20,000 was given to the kin of the seriously injured victims.
Locals say that during the Vidhan Sabha elections, SAD, BJP, Congress, and APP leaders promised that the compensation would be paid immediately after their government was formed, but to no avail.
CMO also directed its superintendent follow-up section to keep track of all developments in this regard.
