JALANDHAR
In a swift response to the public display and discharge of firearms, Jalandhar (rural) police have arrested two individuals who allegedly brandished weapons and fired shots in the air during a traditional “Chhinj Mela” within the jurisdiction of Police Station Patara. The incident, which posed a potential risk to public safety, was promptly controlled by the immediate response of the local police.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sudagar Singh, son of Diwan Singh, resident of Khali Raakh village, and Harjot Singh, son of Hardeep Singh, resident of Kapur Pind village under Patara police station, and nominated their four accomplices.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh told media that after receiving information about the firing incident at the Chhinj Mela, police teams led by SHO Patara immediately acted. The accused fired two rounds in the air using licensed weapons and air guns, causing panic among attendees.
SSP said that such acts of hooliganism and public intimidation will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Preliminary investigation indicates the incident stemmed from internal rivalry, with the accused reportedly displeased with the mela organizers’ support of another group. The timely intervention by the police ensured the peaceful conclusion of the mela without harm to the public.
The Police team conducted a successful raid resulting in the seizure of multiple licensed weapons from their possession including a .32 bore rifle, a .32 bore revolver, and an air gun. The police also recovered several sharp-edged weapons during the operation. Additionally, one vehicle was impounded as part of the seizure.
A case under sections 109(murder bid ), 125(act endangering life or personal safety of others), 190(unlawful assembly ), and 191(3) (rioting )of the BNS, and sections 25/ 27,/29/ of the Arms Act, 1959, has been registered against the accused at Patara police station.
“Our zero-tolerance policy against rowdy behavior and public brandishing of weapons is firm,” added SSP Khakh. “Such acts of intimidation, particularly at public gatherings, will be addressed strictly according to the law. Our focus remains on upholding peace and security across the region.”
