JALANDHAR

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal today urged farmers to become active participants in safeguarding the environment by abandoning stubble-burning practices. Addressing an awareness seminar organized by the Rural Development and Panchayat Department and the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department at Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall, Dr. Aggarwal emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that it is the need of the hour to wage a war against stubble burning to save the environment from pollution.

Highlighting the deteriorating weather conditions caused by smog, Dr. Aggarwal said that everyone can feel the adverse effects, and it is our collective responsibility to take preventive measures to protect the environment. "The harmful practice of burning crop residue not only pollutes the air but also destroys essential nutrients in the soil," he noted.

During the seminar, Dr. Aggarwal presented the 'Vatavaran De Rakhwale' award to over 20 progressive farmers who have refrained from setting their fields on fire. He praised their contribution, stating that their initiative not only safeguards the environment but also helps maintain soil fertility. The awardees will receive priority services in government offices as a mark of recognition for their efforts.

The Deputy Commissioner also announced that 6,342 crop residue management machines have been procured and village-level mapping was also conducted to ensure their optimal use. Additionally, over 200 bailers have been arranged to assist farmers in managing crop residue. Notably, under the 'Vatavaran De Rakhwale' initiative, Panchayats will also receive development work worth Rs. 1 lakh for promoting eco-friendly practices.

Earlier, the DC also took a round at exhibition on crop residue management wherein he took an insight into various machines utilized to manage stubble.
