Jalandhar(rural) police have arrested three members of a gang involved in targeting locked houses and committing burglaries.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sagar, son of Pyara Singh, resident of Ward No. 05, Bhadi Road, Balachaur, Abhi, son of Jagtar alias Kani, resident of Chandigarh Colony, Tanda, and Shambhu, son of Late Chaman Lal, also from Chandigarh Colony, Tanda, District Hoshiarpur.
The senior superintendent of police(SSP) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh told the media that the arrests were made following a special operation by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Adampur, Inspector Sikander Singh Virk, SHO, Bhogpur Police Station after a case was registered in this connection.
The arrests followed a complaint lodged by Niharika, wife of Narinder Pal Sharma, resident of Ladoa, Bhogpur, on 11.09.2024. She reported that her house had been burgled in the afternoon while she was away, and gold jewellery was stolen from her cupboard.
During the investigation, the police team worked tirelessly to trace and apprehend the accused. The gang members had been systematically targeting houses that were locked from the outside, especially those where residents were either at work or living abroad. They would use clever disguises, posing as individuals carrying bottles and envelopes, to scout for potential targets. Once they confirmed the house was vacant, one member would break in while the others stood guard outside.
The police have recovered 50 grams of stolen gold, a motorcycle used in the crimes, a screwdriver, and an iron sieve from the accused. The tools were used to break into houses.
During the preliminary investigation, the accused confessed to committing similar burglaries across districts Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, and Kapurthala. They have admitted to targeting seven houses in the area, focusing on residences where the owners were either away for work or living abroad.
