Over 50,000 saplings distributed under “Green Election” initiative during by-election

JALANDHAR

The by-election in the Jalandhar West constituency was conducted as a “Green Election” due to the efforts of the district administration of Jalandhar. District Election Officer cum Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal stated that the administration had set up some green booths during the recent Lok Sabha elections in the Phillaur Assembly constituency, but this time all 181 booths in the Jalandhar West constituency were made green booths, distributing 50,000 saplings to the voters.

He mentioned that the administration ensured that the saplings from forest department nurseries were delivered to the polling centers early on the voting day to prevent any damage to the plants.

Dr. Aggarwal said, "The main objective of this campaign was to raise environmental awareness among the people ahead of monsoon season so that these saplings could be properly nurtured."

He informed that each polling booth was supplied with 200 to 350 saplings, which were distributed free of cost to voters after they cast their votes, a gesture that was appreciated by the public.

The DC further stated that the administration primarily distributed saplings of neem, arjun, sukhchain, tahli, dhrek, jamun, and guava.

Voters showed a special interest in guava saplings, which were distributed in greater numbers compared to other plants.

He appealed to those who received the saplings to ensure they were planted and properly cared for, to help create a greener environment.
