JALANDHAR: Well before the stage of battle of ballot sets in three urban constituencies of Jalandhar, including Jalandhar (North), Jalandhar (Central) and Jalandhar (West), accelerated bickering in the saffron party has made it BJP versus BJP, before it (BJP) could have pulled its socks to enter into the ‘triangular’ contest.
Interestingly, BJP has registered consecutive wins in all these three constituencies in 2007 and 2012, but strong anti-incumbency and bickering had made it difficult to the ruling alliance partner to continue their winning spree in 2017.
In Jalandhar (North) sitting MLA KD Bhandari is facing strong opposition by his own party leaders and many of them have already staked their claims to get the ticket by replacing Bhandari from the seat.
Prominent among those, who staked claim on Bhandari’s seat is Ravi Mahindru, known for his proximity with former minister and sitting MLA of the adjoining constituency of Jalandhar (Central) Manoranjan Kalia. Bhandari’s rivals have even made a “Chargesheet” against him, comprising his “misdeeds” as MLA.
In Jalandhar (Central) Bhandari took revenge from Kalia, as City Mayor Sunil Jyoti has staked his claim for ticket in place of Kalia. Jyoti is a known confidant of Bhandari. Here problem of Kalia got multiplied as one of the other prominent leaders Amarjit Singh Amri has also staked his claim. Interestingly, this time Kalia may have an advantage of having his close proximity to the State BJP President Vijay Sampla.
Jalandhar (West) is also not spared of the bickering as Sampla is bent upon to change the candidature of sitting MLA and even prefers not to give party ticket to the Mohinder Bhagat, son of the sitting MLA and Cabinet Minister Bhagat Chunni Lal.
It seems that Sampla could not mince the history and how his claim for party ticket from Jalandhar (West) in 2012 was ignored by his predecessors and ticket was allotted to Bhagat.
This time, Sampla has promoted the candidature of a youth and his close relative Ashu Sampla. Even the newly joined famous singer Hans Raj Hans is also considered to be in race from Jalandhar (West) reserve assembly segment.
